WHERE TO STAY
URBN Hotels Shanghai (86-21-5153-4600; www.urbnhotels.com) is a super eco-chic boutique hotel. It is the first carbon-neutral hotel in China and has one of the most unique designs I have ever seen.

Ruijin Hotel (86-21-6472-5222; www.ruijinhotelsh.com) is the former house of Jiang Qing, Mao’s wife. There is a guest room for a single traveler, for around 100 yuan (about $14 at 7 yuan to the dollar) The room is simply and tastefully furnished, with a large window and view to the gardens.

The Yangtze Hotel (86-21-6351-7880; www.yangtzehotel.cn). Excellent location in the center of town. Good price, clean.

The Shanghai Metropole Hotel (86-21-6321-3030; www.shanghai-city-hotel.com) is a wonderful old hotel, five minutes’ walk to the Bund. You can bargain for the room rate when you make reservations, especially off-season.

WHERE TO EAT
I just came back from Shanghai and found the local, street food delicious and amazingly cheap. I would go back just for the scallion pancakes and the egg and chive “burrito!”

If you want a true experience go to the French Concession and duck through one of the multitudes of little alley archways and eat at a “real” Chinese restaurant. Sechuan or Hunan for under $3 a serving.

WHAT TO DO
M50 is the newer art district which houses lots of artists’ studios, but be aware that it’s almost exclusively modern art, not traditional Chinese art. If you like landscape architecture, the place I would recommend is the garden inside Yu Yuan, which is this shopping-mall-type attraction that features all types of shops and eateries, and is jammed with people. The garden needs a paid admission to get in but is very delightful, albeit small. A better garden to see is the Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou. This place is absolutely spectacular.

The best thing to do in Shanghai is start walking, just walk without a plan. In Puxi, wander into the 1930s Shikumen ( “stone gate”), take a look at the wet market going on next to the Suzhou river/Chengdu Lu and afterwards dive into the French Concession and spend time in the Propaganda Poster Art Centre (www.chinasnippets.com/shanghai-cultural/propaganda-poster-art-centre) located in the basement of an apartment building. In Pudong, exit subway station Lujiazui, walk to the Pudong side of the Bund and have a cup of coffee watching the ships pass by, or if you have kids, travel a bit further on the subway until the Science and Technology Museum (www.sstm.org.cn/structure/english/index) stop and visit this fun place.

Shanghai is generally a very safe city, where foreigners can walk around without worries. Get a card from your hotel, with the address in Chinese, so a taxi driver can easily take you there. Wander off the Bund and Nanjing Lu into the back streets and have a good look at the way people really live. I have done this, alone and with Chinese friends, finding it fascinating and highly rewarding. If you get lost, or just want to go back to your room, wave down a taxi driver and show him the hotel’s card. No problem. source:www.nytimes.com
